Ask Bryan

Okay, this is the space where you can ask questions about...well, about anything really, but keep it clean. So, ask away!

Last Chance touched so many of my senses, great movie - If there was a book I would read it. On that note, is there a book called Chosen Journey, by Samuel T. Throckmorton? I could not find any reference to it.
The cast and acting was superb adding a Japanese character who suffered from the internment camps was quite clever - why did you do that? I am an expat from Vancouver Canada and thought that it was a great way to illustrate our not so bright treatment of immigrants.

I look forward to your future projects - I know Robin is a great actress, but unless she has a heart of gold she would not have been able to act out her role as brilliantly as she did in the movie - please congartulate your wonderful and loving friend on both fronts.

Warmest regards - Haig, Pittsburgh

Thank you Haig,

Thank you for your comments on Last Chance. It was a great experience and I'm very proud of the
movie.

I'm not sure of the book. I used the name Throckmorton because I knew a kid with that name growing up.

Last chance is about the boundries that are put on our lives -- some by ourselves, and how people either break out of them or remain stuck when faced with an opportunity. The character of Bea, played by the late great Nobu McCarthy, was one of those people with forced boundries (Japanese internment camp) and she had to confront her future with a choice to continue it or break free.

Lastly, I'll lkeep you posted on my new projects as they develop and will pass along your kind
words to my wife, Robin, who I too think was brilliant in Last Chance.

Thanks

Byan

In one of the first shows when Lois was shaving your body, did she really shave your body? Did you have to really get naked? Also, do you really wear briefs?

1. No, the glued on yak hair could not be shaved, so I had a body double.

2. Well, yes, sort of. I did wear a "cover patch." The boys didn't have to "act" disgusted by the
sight.

3. Yes, when given the choice boxers or briefs, I choose briefs for Hal to wear...they're funnier.

Were you really singing in that Opera episode? And really dancing in that dance dance revolution episode? In all those 'naked' episodes, were you REALLY naked? What about that time you and Francis went on that motorcycle trip, and then you both took mud baths, were you really naked then? And in the big painting episode? Is it weird being naked all the time? Was that a real sunburn on your forehead the time you and the boys skipped school to go that Nascar racing thing? Okay thanks so much! - Belle, Suffern

Dear Miss. Piggie,

Man, you ask a lot of questions!

1) Yes
2) Yes
3) No
4) No
5) No
6) Yes
7) No

Thanks,
Bryan

How long did it take you to write "Last Chance"? Did you storyboard it? - Steven of Fairborn, Ohio

Steven,

I wrote 5 drafts of Last Chance, each draft was shorter than the last one. My shooting script was 95 pages. I didn't storyboard it. When I direct action sequences, like I have on Malcolm, it really helps me to storyboard it so I can be sure not to miss a shot.

Thanks,

B.C.

I would like to know if your character "Hal" in any way relates to your own personality? - Simon, Brampton

In order to play a character, you have to understand them. It is like the time I played a murderer and went on a killing spree. Man was that scary, but oh, did I play that role well. Be safe!

Hallo Bryan. How is your relationship to the other actors of "The King of Queens"? - Saskia, Gummersbach

Where in the world is Gummersbach? I really liked everyone on "King of Queens." It's a very
underated show. For an autograph--just send your address.

All the best,

(whereever you are)

Bryan

My Fiance and I like to Tivo the episodes and watch them together. He loves to analyze every little detail and then, analyze it again. It is driving him crazy that the where-abouts of the families home on the show is not given, and making me crazy from listening to his inscessent story problems. He is trying to figure out the central location by the hours it takes Francis to drive home from the Dude ranch, and the amount of time it takes for Reese to drive round trip to visit his Grandparents. Tonight was just the last straw! Please, I am seriously begging you, without adding to the story propblem, can you tell me this? How far away is the Military school from the families home? How many days did it take Francis to get to Alaska? And where did Reese join the Army-how far from home?

Keep up the fantastic work with "KidSmartz" as well, my son and I learned alot together.

Thanks for being so animated. I love the fact that you portray a functional -"dysfunctional" Family. The cast really works well together. - Big "A", Phoenix

Dear "A",

Boy, sounds like you might need to think twice about marrying this guy! The producer did not want to say where we live.. so, even I don't know. It kind of goes along with us not having a last
name. When someone asks, we teasingly answer its "Nolastname."

Congratulations on your marriage.

Fondly,
Bryan

P.S. Ask for a pre-nup.

Hello Bryan. I really love Malcolm in the Middle series. I wanna ask two questions:
1. Is Season 7 the last season?
2.Will they ever release seson 2,3,4,5 on DVD?
- Karim, Cairo

Hi,
We're all very happy to be going into our Seventh Season. We don't know as yet whether or not if it
will be our last??? We'll just keep making the best show we can and see what happens. As far as a
DVD release on Seasons 2-6, they're trying to resolve music rights issues and costs... we'll see.

Best,
Bryan

Hello Mr Bryan ! I'd like to know if you have ever watched a "Malcolm" episode in another language than english, and if so, what are your feelings about dubbing for Hal (especially in french) ? Thanks and congrats to you + all the cast & crew. - Athony, France

I've never seen Malcolm in any other language, but I look forward to it some day.

Merci

Bryan

In that epsiode where Hal looks in the mirror and sees a younger version of himself I was struck by how much Bryan looks like Errol Flynn. He can do a Bristish accent. Did Mr. Cranston ever wear a thin mustache? - Jonathan, Oakmont, PA

Jonathan,

I'll ask him... actually it's me, Bryan. Thanks for the compliment. Errol Flynn... yes! Chek out
the film, and my English accent, in "Seeing Other People."

Thanks,
B.C.

Hello Bryan, I think the work you have done on MITM is fantastic!! Your truly hilarious and a superb actor. Just wanted to ask what your plans will be once the final season of MITM is over? All the best - Duncan, U.K.

Duncan,
Well, after Malcolm wraps up...and when I finish crying, I guess I'll move on. Actually, I've got several things I'm thinking about. Writing another script or two, directing some more T.V. and films... but I will still always look back on my 7 years with Malcolm as the greatest time in my career, both for the opportunity and the experience itself. What a wonderful show it is.. and will continue to be in re-runs!
Thanks for asking!
Bryan

Are you like Hal in real life? If you are I would love to have you as my dad....ha ha anyway are you? - Richard, Leeds, United Kingdom

Am I like Hal? I get that question a lot. I guess my answer is, I hope not. As far as being your
dad... who knows, maybe I am. Describe your mother to me.

Best,
Bryan

Hey Mr.Cranston! This is great being able to email you! I love all your work! Anyway, I just wanted to ask what your favorite Malcolm episode is(mine is "Malcolm holds his tounge" when Hal started speedwalking! that was one of tv's funniest moments! and what you said as Hal,"See that Dewey?! Thats AIIRRRR!!!") And is Van Halen your favorite band in real life? Thanks alot! - Cory

Cory,
That Episode is one of my favorites too...And how can you NOT love Van Halen?! Jump!
Thanks for watching Malcolm,
Bryan

hello! i have been a fan of yours since "seinfeld". i think you are so darn funny!! i am upset about malcolm ending :( it is my favorite show right now. my question is...what will you do now? take a break? after seven wonderful, and funny seasons of malcolm i would need a break, lol. i guess i will close now...thank you for seven great seasons of malcolm and i wish you all the luck in your future projects! -Bill, Massachussetts

p.s. why didnt you like the label-maker??? lol

Bill,
Watch your "darn" language!
Who can complain after getting the gift of seven wonderful years?! What now? Ironically, I was just hired by the remarkable talent Jason Alexander to be in a Sam Shepard play he's directing here in Los Angeles. (I'll post the information on the site in a while). So Dr. Tim Whatley will soon be told what to do by George Costanza...small world.
Take Care,
Bryan
P.S. It was a Label Baby Jr. not even the regular size!

Jane's real-life husband, Bradley Whitford, has guest-starred on "Malcolm" in the past. Is there any chance your wife Robin will show up in the future? - Dave, Sterling Virginia

Dave,
I'd love to have my wife come on the show, but she'd have to sleep with me to get the part, so...I don't think she'll be on anytime soon.

From an empty casting couch,
Bryan

When my husband and I started watching Malcolm, he didn't believe you played Tim Watly on Seinfeld. It took me a minute to realize it too. How can you morph your characters like that? - Jeannine, Milwaukie, OR

Jeannine,
It's easy, I'm not human.

Bryan

just wondered whether you socialize with any of the Malcolm cast away from set? If so, which people do you spend the most time with? - Gary, U.K.

Gary,
Yes, two of them mostly. Erik (Dewey) because he's around my daughter's age, and he visits a lot-- I can make him work around my house. And Jane (Lois) because, well, because the sex with a fake wife is just sooo good!
Bryan

Hello. Please tell me if the decision to cancel Malcolm is inevitable or is there ANYTHING the public can
do en masse to keep the program on?

Is Fox thinking straight, or is this the result of one of the cast wishing to make a break such as Bea Arthur in The Golden Girls? You have much more to offer (there are still kids who haven't aged out with aging parents--one of the major issues with some boomers still around! Thanks for taking time to reply. And, by the way, your "scream" is hilarious! Thank you.

If fans write to Fox TV executives, en mass, as you put it, who knows it may have an effect. It was strictly their decision to end the show, and strictly theirs to keep us going.
All the Best,
Bryan

I have been a fan of yours since you played Dr. Tim Whatley on "Seinfeld." You are hilarious! I just have to ask, we all know that Dr.Whatley was a re-gifter. Have you ever re-gifted something in your real life? - Dan, Springfield

Dan,

Being of frugal Scotch-Irish descent, I'm proud to say that I re-gift all the time. In fact the picture you'll receive shortly, was first given to me!

All the best,

Bryan

Has there ever been an embarassing moment when your on a plain or somewhere public and they show your film or something your in? i guess thats one of the downsides to being an actor/actress...he he. - D

D.,
Yes!
I was on a flight last year that aired an episode of the show "King of Queens". I had played a character called Tim Sacksky, Doug and Carrie's neighbor, in a few episodes and this particular one had me in a speedo bathing suit almost throughout the whole show! I slid down in my seat and kept a newspaper up to my face-- but it didn't work. I was spotted and ordered off the plane at once. Fortunateluy I always travel with a parachute, so no harm was done.
Thanks for watcing Malcolm!
Bryan

What is the surname of your family in malcolm in the middle? -Christopher

Our family surname is NOLASTNAME...
Thanks for watching Malcolm,
Bryan

Is it possible that there is a further Season of MitM? -Benjamin, Zurich

Benjamin-
No. In fact we just heard the news that this will be our last season of producing new episodes of Malcolm. What a great seven years it's been, a total of 151 episodes! Thanks to you and all of our fans!
All the best.
Bryan
P.S. We will run in syndication for a long time though!

I recently bought a members only jacket and i love it. Then i recognised you wearing one in many episodes of mitm. I just wondered if it was yours or if it was a costume. Thanks -Adam, London

Adam,
Your fashion styles is wonderfully stunted, just like Hal's is. We premiered in 2000, twenty years after the "Members Only" jacket burst onto the fashion scene. I asked the costume designer, Heidi Kaczenski, to get me one because i wanted Hal to be 20 years behind the times. Thanks for noticing.
Cheers,
Bryan

Big fan. Just want to know why I've never seen you in any movies, but you're still funny, no offense and yeah you rock. - Ivan

Ivan,
My busy schedule on Malcolm demands that I be very choosy on what projects to do during hiatus, so that I can still spend time with my family. I did an adult comedy last year called, "Seeing Other People", and right now I'm shoooting a film with Greg Kinnear called "Little Miss Sunshine" that will be out early next year.
Best,
BC

Hi Bryan,
I think you're a terrific actor, and I love watching the physical comedy you do on`Malcolm.' As a young man, what were the things that got you interested in becoming an actor? Continued good luck. - Paul, Los Angeles, CA

Paul, I knew it was special and I could see the attention paid to actors, but I matured and went into the acting profession for more substantial reasons. Mainly, girls.

Bryan

Hey Bryan, As I write this, I have recently seen the MITM epsiode: "Ida Loses a Leg." Indeed, a very fine piece of television. I'm very interested to know how the effect was achieved. It looked very real. Has actress, Cloris Leachman really lost her limb? Although, looking at the scene leading up to the accident, her leg seemed real emough --- leading to more confusion. Would you be willing to share the secret? If not, then it was superbly done - easily one of the best episodes this season! - Darren, Manchester

Yes, Darren... she is such a professional. She atually had her leg cut off at the knee to satisfy
the storyline. She is a trooper, though she now needs to lean on us a bit more.

Best,
Bryan

Hi Bryan, I would just like to say that you are a true legend and that you make Hal a loveable & hilarious character on MITM - Some of your facial expressions are genius! The show is fantastic and it will be a great shame come May. It differs from other shows as we have actually seen the family grow older in front of us and it can be true to life at times! Thanks for the memories to you and the rest of the crew and best of luck for the future. - Matthew, Wales

Matthew,
On behalf of our cast and crew, thank you, and all the thousands of fans who have written about how the show has effected them. We've had a blast bringing you all 151 episodes, and we appreciate our good fortune. We couldn't have succeeded without the great fans- laughing with us for 7 years. I'll keep you posted on our futures on this site.
All the best-
Bryan

My husband and I are addicted to Malcom in the Middle!! We SO look forward to sitting down
together and watching what kind of crazy funny thing Hal will do next! Just wanted to let you know that you rank right up there with Robin Williams in my book! WE LOVE YOU!!! Now that know more about what you have been doing and have done I am eager to check out your other projects. You are certainly an underrated phenomenal actor and I hope you will stick with the show as well as continue with your directing. Take care! - Matt and Joy, Evansville, IN

Dear Matt and Joy,
There is a 12 step program to help you with your Malcolm addiction. It involves a straight-jacket.
Thanks for your kind words. By the way,
Matt n'Joy was my favorite candy bar growing up.

Bryan

Bryan, I have recently become a fan of the show and really enjoy your work. There really seems to be good chemistry between you and Jane, how do you get along? - Richard, Robbisdale

Richard,
We get along very well. It's great to have a TV wife... there's no arguments, you don't see too
much of each other, etc. Also, I want to thank Bradley Whitford of the "West Wing" (Jane's real
husband) for paying for the well being and education of "his" children with Jane. He's a mench.

Bryan

Dear Bryan Cranston, I can't tell you how much I enjoy your performances on Malcolm. You are shameless, and I love it. Some of my favorite scenes involve you wearing some kind of costume and dancing--the video contest, teaching Malcolm to roller skate, etc. You are a truly entertaining actor. Thank you! - Noreen, Burlington, VT

P.S. I'm sure you don't care about meeting me--of course--but I would love the opportunity to meet you in person. Any possiblity you and your family will be in the New England area any time soon? (Do lots of people ask to meet you in person?)

Noreen,

Like a mail order bride, I'm available for purchase. Actually, I will let people know when I am making appearances. As far as being shameless, an acting teacher once said, "One must be willing to be stripped naked in front of an audience," I took it to heart. Unfortunately, I came to find out he meant it figuratively, not literally. Oh well...

Best,
Bryan

How Do Bryan. Are you aware of how awesome you are? - Stephen, Golborne, England

No...Tell me...

Absolutely love your show. Don't know if you saw my question from the other month, but would still like to know how much adlib you get to do or how much input you get into lines for Hal. Hal's rejoicing in the wife of his youth is a great example to us hubbies everywhere. Also, as dad of 6 I recommend everyone get a copy of KidSmartz. Give it as a gift to new parents. - Roger, Haltom City, TX

Roger,
Thank you for your comments, especially for KidSmartz. For those of you not familiar with it, please go to that section on my web site. We're helping thousands of families to stay safe from abduction and sexual exploitation. As far as Malcolm, the actors don't do much ad libbing at all... that shows how good our writers are I think.

Best,
B

Do you have some sort of fetish about appearing shirtless, pantless or both? Please get some help. - Mike, Tulsa

Mike,
I guess I didn't read the nudity clause in my contract very carefully. It states that to ensure
levity, Hal must be in some state of undress at all times... just my luck.

Bryan

hi!! ohh i was so sad when i saw the last episode of Malcolm, but still laughed away..Did the cast and crew, have a big celebration for the last show? My whole family watched it and we were all mad when it ended. Well later days, hah i don't normally say that, bye! - Layla, Victoria

Layla,
Thank you for being a great fan of the show. We'll miss it too. Yes, we had a wonderful send-off. Full of laughs and tears, as we said goodbye to a family after seven years.
All the best,
Bryan

Hello Bryan, What were you doing before you became rich and famous? And if by one strange circumstane, you weren't an actor, what do you think you would be doing instead? I asked a similar question to another famous personality. (Well, a DJ on Virgin Radio). He said that he would be a painter and decorator. Can you beat that? - Darren, Manchester, England

Darren,
Before I was rich and famous, I was poor and unknown. If I wasn't an actor, I think I'd give a try
at the only other profession I'm passionate about... mucking out dung and body parts at a
slaughterhouse. Who am I kidding... that's just a dream.

Bryan

Hi Bryan,
Love the show esp since we have 5 children of our own. We relate too well. I was wondering where the show is suppose to take place. Is a city or state ever mentioned? Thanks and looking forward to seeing you tonight at 10 central. - Renee, Dekalb Junction, NY

Hey Renee,
We don't even know. It's not even a secret. It was just never established and it's kinda fun to
leave it that way. By the way, we joke that our last name is "Nolastname"... Eastern European.

All the Best,
Bryan

Watching Malcolm sometimes I think how bad Hal would feel if he were real. But how does it make you feel getting into his shoes? I mean, in the show Hal has undergone serious humiliating stuff, how can you break the bridge between Bryan and Hal? - Felix, Spain

Getting into Hal's shoes is pretty easy. First, I sit down, then I put one shoe on at a time, and then I tie the shoe laces. I like Hal's shoes laces. I like Hal's shoes, they are worn in and comfortable... so I don't break the bridge, I just walk across it.

You worked around my question, to answer something cute, which I didn't like (just kidding), but I wanted some serious committed answer. Watching the show, you have been almost naked in more than one occasion. I don't have any problem with nudity, but you gotta need some gall to pull one of those, don't you? I was a wiz kid at school and that's why I love the show. - Felix, Spain

An acting teacher once taught me that to be an effective actor, you have to be willing to appear
naked... he meant emotionally naked. I misunderstood and took it literally, but there is truth in both. You have to be open, vulnerable, and not easily embarrassed. To act effectively, you have to imagine yourself being able to do in public what you do when you are completely alone. Take that wiz kid!

Hallo ich habe an sie eine frage sie mir von der serie Malcolm mittendrin ein Autogramm besorgen? Bitte um antwort. - Daniel, Austria

If I remember my German correctly, your asking me if I like to shear sheep in the nude? Of course, yes, comfort is important when you are shearing.

I'm 18 years and a fan of Malcolm in the Middle. I was wondering whether you like british comedy, or if you have seen any british comedy? Glad you like the UK, have the creators of Malcolm ever considered casting an English character. I'm willing!!??? - Gary, United Kingdom

Hey Gary,
Love British comedy. Lately, "The Office" has really caught on here. To my knowledge, there are no English characters being created on "Malcolm." Here's a thought, if you are pursuing an acting career, you should learn standard American English to expand your available roles. Check out my British accent in the new film "Seeing Other People," and see what you think.

You've exhibited quite a bit of fancy footwork on Malcolm. Have you ever taken any professional dancing classes, or do you just have natural rhythm? - Lakini, Albany

Call me twinkle toes. Honestly, in my past, one of the physically hardest classes that I have ever taken was ballet. I have the most respect for dancers. Excuse me while I practice my pirouettes.

Myself and my friends here in England are big fans of your work on "Malcolm." I'm always spreading the word for the show! Are you aware of the popularity of teh show here, and have you ever been to England? - Andy, Liverpool

Dear Brits,
Glad to hear the show is popular in the UK. I absolutely LOVE it there and try to find any reason to go back. Cheers & TTFN!

I absolutely love Malcolm in the Middle. I think you are an awesome actor! I have a couple of questions to ask you: Have the producers decided whether Jamie will be a boy or a girl? How many more years will you continue playing Hal on Malcolm in the Middle? How come you and Jane Kaczmarek didn't do a charity project together? - Melissa, San Francisco

Hi Melissa,
The producers won't tell me! They don't want me to blab it! As far as the show - I'll leave when they kick me out.
Like most people, Jane and I have our own pet projects, but maybe someday we'll team up!

For some time former Chicago homicide detective J.J. Bittenbinder and I have been putting together a project series on recognizing the warning signs of potential childhood violence in school. The series focuses on kids under the age of 13. We have a basic trailer developed and have arranged for national distribution on PBS but need a narrator with name recognition who cares about kids safety. Would you consider narrating the piece? I would be happy to send you the trailer if you have the time. Thanks. - J.R. Olivero, Point Of Rocks

J.R.,
Hmmm, I’ll need to think about that. Overexposure creates a "personality", and suddenly you find you’re no longer an actor. That’s a dangerous position for me to be in. I took a risk with Kidsmartz because it’s so important to me, but my advisors warn against too much visibility with products, even worthwhile ones such as yours sounds.

I am a School Resource Officer in Virginia, and wanted to know the age appropriate for the KidsSmartz tape, I am in the Middle Schools and often have to teach Safety issues to 6th graders. Thanks so much! - Kellie, Dale City, Virginia

Kellie,
Perfect! KidSmartz fits right into what you’re looking for. I’d say the program is appropriate for ages 6 – 17. Not everyone will agree, so that’s why I recommend adults view it first, then decide what chapters are right for your age group. Remember, there is no use of weapons or violence anywhere in KidSmartz. Keep up the good work!

Is KidSmartz only available in DVD? I saw you talking about it on our local Fox station and would like to purchase it. We are a low tech family with only a VCR. Thanks - Lauren, Olney, MD

Lauren,
Yes, the decision was made to go DVD to save money, but it does play on most computers too! Thanks for your interest.

Nice meeting you during the Fox 59 am shoot in Indy. I didn't have time to relate to you that I enjoy your work. - Lou, Indianapolis

Lou,
Thanks. You’ve got a bundle of energy at 5:30 in the morning! You might want to switch to decaf.

I am looking to purchase a kidsmartz video but I'm not sure whos selling them. - Norman, South Hadley

Norman,
You found it. I have a link to Amazon where you can purchase the DVD. Thanks. Let me know what you think.

I met you at the Indianapolis 500 Race. Did you enjoy the race? What else did you do in Indy? - Molly, Indianapolis

Molly,
My buddy, Bill and I had a great time at the race. The only downside was my friend, Sarah Fisher’s car blew out on her. I felt bad for her, but she’s got spunk…she’ll be back strong. I also appeared on the Fox morning show to promote KidSmartz. It was nice to meet you.

Not a question, just a thank you. I am about to order the KidSmartz video. Not only do I plan on showing it to my children 6&4 but I am going to share it with the kids a our Tae Kwon Do school. It seems to show situations that kids may not see as a threat now but after watching they will more clearly see a possible bad situation and just stay away. Which is the most important self defense they could learn. Thank you. - Rene, Pasadena

Rene,
No, thank you! We did exhaustive work on the program, under the scrutiny of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and the FBI. The most important factor is to get this information out to families everywhere, the second most important factor is to raise money for the center, so I would ask you to recommend, to your friends who can afford the $14.99, to purchase the DVD. I’m glad you found the information useful.

What importance do you give to awards? They clearly aren't a reflection of quality, just look at Jason Alexander's snubbing for Seinfeld, and your own I might add - for Seinfeld and Malcolm. Yet, when it comes to emmy season, a nomination seems to be what most actors aspire to. -Chris, Sydney, Australia

G’day Chris,
Honestly, sometimes it seems frivolous, doesn’t it? The important element to awards is the awareness level within the industry and public. If you become well known (i.e.: a star) you are able to achieve more control of your future career choices. I agree with you, Jason deserved the recognition, and got it by receiving several nominations.

Is Chris Masterson (francis) married? I think he is so hot. - Jennifer, Palo Alto

Jennifer,
Isn’t he?! No, he’s not married but has a wonderful lady in his life – so, back off.

Have you given any thought to which two episodes you'll be submitting to the Emmy awards this year? -Bob, Richmond

Bob,
I’ve decided to submit the episodes titled "Malcolm Holds His Tongue" and "Day Care" for Emmy consideration. The first one shows more physical comedy (Hal becomes infatuated with race-walking), and the second more verbal (Hal has to fake his way through teaching a bible class). It was a tough choice because the shows were so strong this year.

In the original script for the Malcolm pilot, the family had a last name (which I won't mention here) but which was subsequently discarded to add a sense of mystique to the show. Have there been any discussions amongst the cast, writers and creater Linwood Boomer to eventually stick the family with a surname, or is the plan to keep that an enigma? - Petch, Hattiesburg, MS

Petch,
Good observation. In an early draft of the pilot there was a last name listed but was soon discarded. We like to kid around when asked that question. Our response is "our last name is Nolastname". You can figure it out.

When I first saw Malcolm I think I possibly saw one of the funniest and most talented comedic actors I've seen in a long time... in case I'm not being clear, I mean you. (; You put SO much energy into every performance and it's pretty much a privilege to watch each week. SO very impressed! I'm also wondering if you'd ever had doubts that you'd make it this far in your career? Also, do you have any plans for the future? - Jed, Melbourne, Australia

Jed,
Thanks for the praise…your check is in the mail. I never had any doubts I’d make it this far, but not for the reasons you think. I love to act. I choose it as my profession regardless of where it would take me. It’s a journey not suited for everyone because of its uncertainty, but if you have a burning passion for something, you must go for it. Future plans, hmm? Yes, I’m enjoying directing a lot and plan to do more Malcolm episodes.

I noticed from your bio that you took a cross country trip. I'm about to graduate college and was thinking of doing the same. Any advice? - Serena, Emporia, KS

Serena,
I love to travel. Sometimes I just want to head out and discover where I end up, it can be really exciting. Now, with a family, I have to be more careful. Can I assume you're female from your name? You too should enjoy exploring travel, but need to be careful. Take a friend.

Do you have a favorite episode of "Malcolm in the Middle."? - Boog, Muncie, IN

Boog,
I think, to date, my favorite episode is "roller-skates", where Hal teaches Malcolm how to skate like a pro. It turns out Hal was a roller-boogie disco champion.

Have you ever met Britney Spears? She's hot. - Mark, Los Angeles, CA

Mark,
I've never met Britney Spears...but I like asparagus spears.
